Alex Paul Loza (b. 1978) is a visual artist based in Chattanooga, TN with his heart for social advocacy and a deep appreciation of figurative narrative art. He received his BFA from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, IL. With almost two decades of experience, Loza has been commissioned to paint portraits and custom wall art for private and public art collectors throughout North & South America. He has also lead, created and collaborated with national muralists in several public art projects in Chicago and Chattanooga.

In addition to creating public artworks Loza spends time in his studio creating oil paintings and sculptures to exhibit in local and national galleries and museums. Loza has contributed to numerous organizations by offering art classes, workshops and demonstrations to the community, including serving on committees and boards such as the advisory committee for “Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art” exhibit, a collection drawn entirely from the Smithsonian American Art Museum (2017), the Latin American advisory committee for the Hunter Museum of American Art, and member of the Chattanooga/ Hamilton County Community Arts Team for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Any Given Child Initiative. He is also the Co-Founder and Executive Director of CLAVA – Center of Latin American Visual Arts. Loza continues to engage with his community through public art and cultural events. Outside of his painting practice, Loza is an adjunct art professor at Lee University.

After a nation-wide search Loza was selected to sculpt a monument of Thaddeus Stevens scheduled to be installed on April 2022 in Gettysburg, PA. Stevens is one of the greatest statesmen in United States history known as the Savior of public education in Pennsylvania as well as the Father of the 14th Amendment, the single most important Constitutional amendment requiring equal treatment under the law and extending civil liberties to the state level.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Alex Paul Loza’s artworks exemplifies an exploration of the human experience. With every stroke he strives to capture the essence of each subject and not just their likeness. For Loza, looking, listening, sharing, and engaging directly with community members are inseparable from the artwork, the place, and the form.

Whether he is sculpting, oil painting, or creating public murals & monuments, he often draws on the human form and condition to create artworks that would uplift, inspire, unite, celebrate cultures, but most importantly provide an opportunity for open-ended engagement with his viewers. Loza’s latest works are a testament to his mission and vision: The “Veterans Memorial Mural” honors our courageous Purple Heart men and women in uniform and those that paid the ultimate sacrifice. His “Sapiykunapaq: My Roots, Mis Raíces” and the “Dreaming Forward/ Soñando” mural celebrates the Indigenous, African, Asian and European influences within the Latino community. His life-size portrait bust of Dr. Emma Rochelle Wheeler immortalizes the life and memory of Chattanooga’s trailblazer, educator, entrepreneur and first African American physician.
